Winter Event – antifreeze

This website forms part of the project Winter Event – antifreeze by the artist Katja Aglert, curated by Stefanie Hessler.

Winter Event – antifreeze is an interdisciplinary artistic research project initiated by Katja Aglert during a residency trip to the Arctic in 2009. Since its beginning, the project has turned into a multi-branched structure with repeated variations in the form of performances, a video, a script, installations, a book – and this website.

Winter Event – antifreeze investigates repetition as a method and a framework for transformation rather than duplication. The project dissects clichés of mysticism and heroism related to the Arctic, and shows how human shortcomings can be a source for laugh-provoking expressions. The title is based on George Brecht’s 1960s Fluxus score “Winter Event – antifreeze”. Aglert applied the instruction repeatedly throughout the project, for instance by melting ice in her bare hands every time she went ashore in the Arctic. The performance was documented and the video developed in a “behind the scenes” logic, in which the focus does not lie on the acts performed before, but rather on what is happening behind the camera. Out of the video, further reiterations developed – all of which are represented on this website.
